Design Tips

Today I’m just going to go over some basic Design Tips that we use throughout our planning as we go through a project.  Some may be old hat to you but hopefully some will be new and enlightening.

Do let paint be the last item you choose in the room.

There are only so many fabrics and carpets to choose from so start with those items first.  Choices for paint are pretty much limitless so choose the fixed items first then adapt the paint to coordinate.

Do layer your lighting

Using just overhead lighting is not ideal.  Bring some of the light down to eye level by adding lamps to a room.  It will make the room much more intimate and Do use dimmers!  I like them added to lamps as well but at the very least add them to the recessed lighting to add atmosphere to the room when you need it.

It doesn’t have to match

Don’t just do two matching cushions on a sofa. Have three.  It is much more interesting and they definitely do not need to match or be the same size.  Using different but complimentary fabrics in three different sizes is a lot more interesting than two matching cushions.

Do decorate in odd numbers.  Its always more interesting than an even number.  Three candles instead of two, Three cushions instead of two etc.

Don’t be afraid to paint a vintage find.  It can add a whole new level of interesting.

Bathroom renovating tips

Do raise the vanity height if you are renovating your bathroom. You will appreciate the extra height, as it is more ergonomically correct than the older lower vanities. Standard vanity height nowadays is 34” which is far more comfortable than lower vanities.

Do use sconces (or pendants) flanking the bathroom mirror. They give the best light for shaving and makeup application.  Overhead light causes shadows.

Living area tips

Do hang dining room chandeliers at 30-36” over the table.  This increases the intimacy for dining and helps the light relate to the table.

Do keep at minimum of 15” between the sofa and coffee table.  People need legroom.
