Blinds

I talked about curtains in a previous blog post so now I am going to narrow down and decipher some options for blinds for your home. Window treatments is a pretty big subject but I am hoping by breaking the topic down it may not be quite so overwhelming the next time you need to get some window treatments for your windows.

As you may know there are many options for blinds and of course the style you choose will have an impact on the design style you are trying to achieve. Blinds can be a great addition to a space. They allow more accurate light control, they can be pulled up out of the way, and they come in a variety of privacy or sun control options.

PRIVACY AND LIGHT CONTROL

The first decision you will need to make is how much privacy or light control do you want? Roller blinds come in various porosities so if you want complete black out you can achieve that or if you just need a bit of light control you can also achieve that.

STYLE MATTERS

Next you will want to know what style you are looking for. Generally speaking, if you use a horizontal wood slat blind that will give you a more traditional and/or cottagey look. The horizontal wood blinds add a bit of softness and can add a more organic feel to the space. If you are going for sleek and contemporary this is not the best option for you. These blinds tend to stay in the down position most of the time. Light control and privacy are dictated by how much you slant the slats. The wood slats add to the overall design style of the room.

Modern Kids

If you are wanting a more contemporary vibe then roller shades is a good option for you. These can roll right up into themselves and almost disappear which allows the window and/or view to be the feature.

NATURAL OPTIONS

Woven wood blinds are a great way to add a lot of warmth and a more casual look to a room. They bring in an organic texture into any room. They have a nubby, slub-like look, which makes it a casual option. Woven wood blinds filter light. They don’t block it out completely unless you line them but if you do that, they can lose their organic nature a bit.

One more thing I will say here and that is if you can afford it, go for a mid range price point on blinds. If you go for a very inexpensive version they will not only look cheap but also they will not function as well either, which can be frustrating when trying to operate them. If you would like to get good quality, well made blinds, I am happy to work with you and my local workroom here in Victoria to create the blinds for your new home.

As you have read there are many options out there. Drop us a line and let us know your favourite window treatments.
